Turning Accra's plastic crisis into fashionable, sustainable bags, powered by artisan skill and community collaboration.
Follow Upcrafts ↗In three major fishing communities in Accra, La, James Town, and Korle Gonno, fisherfolk pull plastic debris from the Atlantic Ocean daily. Ghana imports about 10,000 metric tonnes of plastic annually, generating 300 tonnes of waste daily in Accra alone.
Upcrafts partners with Mr. Yaw, a leathersmith in Madina, to transform this collected plastic waste into fashionable, sustainable bags, creating employment, reducing ocean pollution, and demonstrating the circular economy in action.
We donated an upcycled bin made from plastic bottles to the University of Ghana Staff Village Basic School, planting the seed of segregation in the next generation.
